Introducing the Dacre Stubbs Archive.
I
In this issue, Motormarques begins its presentation of the "Dacre Stubbs Collection" This is a collection of images that range from the Brighton Speed Trials (UK) of 1946 to the Bathurst 1000 (Aust) of 1968.
The late Mr Stubbs was a professional photographer and author (Prehistoric Art of Australia ) who moved to Australia, and continued writing his journal and taking photographs of motor sport and personalities, as well as of Aboriginal art and other images which are held in the National Archives of Australia. Mr Stubbs was a member of a coterie of racing drivers and mechaniocs that included Raymond Mays, George Abecassis, Sidney Allard, John Cooper, John Heath, Kay Petre, Ken Wharton, Reg Parnell, Prince Bira, and many others. In Australia, his acquaintances included John Barraclough, Lex Davison, Charlie Dean, Tony Gaze, Stan Jones, Bib Stillwell, Otto Stone, Doug Whiteford, Arthur and Ken Wylie, and many others. All of these great names and many others are represented in this photographic collection During the next few issues we will concentrate on the 1946 Brighton Speed trials with images of many famous drivers and cars of the era. Motormarques has been given the rare and valuable priviledge of access to 500 black and white photos shot initially in England immediately after the end of World War 2 when motor racing was being resumed. This archive continues from the time when Mr Stubbs and family migrated to Australia in the late 1940s. Martin Stubbs, Dacre's son, also a vintage and classic motor sport enthusiast, has supplemented the collection with some of his own images of the Australian scene.
More in our next issue. Memories of the ‘Brooklands’ Racing Scene in the 30’s contain extracts of the journals of Dacre Stubbs' 'Early English and Australian Motorsport Please note that researchers, authors, historians, and other interested parties are invited to contact us with us to request information on their projects. |
