Race Retro (AKA The Historic Motor Sports Show)
Stoneleigh, Warks., 13/14/15
Text and Pictures – Carol Corliss

Despite the opening date of Friday 13th, the annual curse of Stoneleigh was lifted this year.  For five years that weekend had attracted some of the worst weather of the winter and every year either sleet or snow managed to throw itself down on the event. This was particularly hard on the Rally Stage sector.

However, this year the gods smiled down and exceptionally mild spring-like sunny conditions raised everyone’s spirits.

The show has recently been taken over by Live Events who for this year had not made any drastic changes to the format.  This year’s show celebrated Aston Martin, the 50 years of the Mini and Triumph Motor Cycles.  The format as of other years was little changed but the new ownership had wisely decided not to alter too much at such short notice and maybe next year will be looking to impose some of their own ideas upon the event. The concept of this show has always been to gather together the many forms of historic motor sports, allowing the very diverse participants and fans to mix freely.

The sleek DBR1 Aston Martin graced the front entrance to the exhibition halls and in Hall No. 2 a terrific array of historic racing vehicles laid on by Hall & Hall hit one in the eye immediately upon entering.

The VSCC preferred to stress well earned grime to the usual glitz of shown vehicles and were displaying much used regulars on their racing scene. .  I feel that their emphasis was that the Club is all about fun not necessarily flash.  A refreshing change from many of the over-egged specimens on show

In the motorcycle area the jewel in the crown of the display of Triumphs was the Daytona record breaking streamlined model in the centre.

A section devoted to tributing Pat Moss/Carlsson was very popular, very fitting as she sadly passed away recently.

Tony Mason and Steve Parrish were their usual irrepressible selves and kept the public entertained with their interviewing skills all weekend.  Other regular faces over the weekend were; Rauno Aaltonen, Richard Attwood, Rosemary Smith, Paddy Hopkirk, Mark Higgins, Mick Grant, Tim Parnell, Norman Dewis and many other personalities of the motoring world.

H & H Auctions had a good turnout of auction cars along with an impressive bike entry.  Simon Hope said that it had been a good auction and expressed satisfaction with the outcome.

All in all a good show and an excellent curtain raiser for another historic season, whatever the particular branch of the sport.
