British Sports Car Flea Market

From our Canadian Correspondent

A sure sign of Spring in Canada is our annual British Sports Car Flea Market and Show in Ancaster Ontario. We put away our dogsleds and crawl out of our igloos to attend an event which is the combined effort of the Austin-Healey Club of Southern Ontario and the British Sports Car Club of Hamilton. This year’s show attracted over 300 English cars and over 4000 spectators out of hibernation.

The event originally began in 1982 when a small group of British Sports Car enthusiasts recognized the need for Club members and businesses to exchange information, parts, and services to support a growing hobby. It has grown each year and attracts visitors from all over Ontario, Quebec and from the States of New York and Michigan. Commercial dealers and hobbyists display their wares using everything from purpose built displays to the back of their pick up truck. One man’s junk is another man’s bounty as deals are made for trash and treasure. Old friends are reacquainted, stories are told and winter automotive projects are scrutinized. Our car season has begun!

The Fairgrounds in Ancaster were packed with our largest ever grouping of English cars of every description. As I entered the track I was very tempted to open up my Healey’s tri-carbs and spin its’ wheels when the marshals flagged me down. We don’t want to stir up too much dust! It was a fantastic sunny warm spring day that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. A far cry from the snow flurries we have battled in previous years. A wide variety of English car marques were represented with quite a number wearing “for sale” signs.

We look forward to a busy season of driving and enjoying our British treasures. We have a strong enthusiastic following of single and multiple marque clubs. I look forward to reporting on some of the highlights in the future.  Keep the shiny side up!
